treadmills
K.K. asked:

I’m training for the cross country season and can’t run outside a lot because of the weather. However, running on the treadmill seems twice as difficult because it gets so hot inside and even though it feels like i’m running fast it takes me longer to run than the same distance outside. Is this normal?

As a former cross country runner, I used to have to use the treadmill when the weather conditions were bad too.

It should feel boring and feel like it’s taking your longer to run the same distance outside. You don’t realize your pace by things moving around you.

It can be harmful if you do it every day. I was prone to tendinitis (an injury around the shin on the side of the leg) and running on hard surfaces like the treadmill could cause shinsplints too. You need a good treadmill with good padding, or very good shoes (which is a better investment). Even with prescription pads in very good shoes, I still have pain when I run for a long period of time on hard surfaces for many days in a row. But many of my team-mates never had this problem. Tendinitis put me out for a good portion of my season two years in a row. Better safe than sorry.

I guess it comes down to location! Living in Florida it is just too hot to run outside unless you go before sun up this time of the year! The treadmill is the way to go!!!
