I’m trying to talk my husband into buying a treadmill. We have kids and I can’t go walking around the neighborhood all the time. I need to be home. He said he doesn’t want one cause they cause problems with your knees. I don’t understand how that could be.

They can cause knee problems because there can be a lot of impact on the joints when running on them. Running outside on a dirt path (not cement) would be a lot better, or you could buy an elliptical.
Generally, he is right. However running in general isn’t that great for impact on your knee joints. Like above said, an eliptical would be good too!
Since you are talking about walking then he is wrong. Jogging and running(even though you did clarify walking) however are hard on joints no matter where you do it at.
I don’t like the pressure that a treadmill puts on all my joints. I would look into investing in an elliptical because it wont bother your husbands knees at all. If you are really looking to run though try it out and see. I use to get horrible pain in my shins when I would use the treadmill but the more I used it the less painful it was. O and also dont run on your toes cause that will make your shins and knees feel more of the impact.
