Well, it’s actually somewhat accurate.
Since metabolism and weight have a relatively strong correlation, it uses these factors to determine how many calories someone each age and weight will burn at certain speeds and inclines.

the metabolic calculations based on one MET = 3.5 ml O2 per kg of body weight. Add that to meters per min x.1 for walking and .2 for running…….

Mines right on the money. I calculated my calories burned at several websites and they all match what my treadmill says.
